Design Your Bedroom with Emotional Architecture

Today, I’m opening the doors to this master bedroom to share how to design your own space using Emotional Architecture.

In summary, this design approach revolves around one key question:

How do I want to feel in my home?


Based on your emotions, we use techniques from neuroarchitecture and color psychology to ensure that through colors, materials, and textures, your space reflects the emotions you want to experience every day.


Why settle for a home that stresses or saddens us? Our home should be a refuge that makes us feel proud, serene, energized, and joyful.


This isn’t just a made-up story. Neuroarchitecture is backed by scientific research. It all began with Jonas Salk in the 1950s, who discovered that a stimulating environment could promote the creation of new neurons – a concept once thought impossible. These findings, initially revealed through psychological studies, are now observable with neuroimaging devices.

That sounds great, but how do we actually apply this to our home?


We apply it through the Coaching Home method, combining ontological coaching and neuroarchitecture techniques. We start by defining how we want to feel in our space.

For this room, the goal was to feel tranquility, gratitude, and peace.


The next step is to define a purpose for each space.

For example, the purpose of this bedroom was:


"I want to spend more quality time with my husband in our room, feeling calm, grateful, and at peace."


As you can see, this design process involves introspection, as it leads us to ask what we truly want in life. It’s a deeply personal journey because everyone interprets emotions differently.


For this bedroom, peace evoked an image of a field, forest, and a gentle breeze. Tranquility was linked to mental peace and nature, while gratitude connected with love and happiness.

As you can see, these aren’t dictionary definitions – they’re 100% personal responses.


Next, using color psychology, we selected colors that represent these emotions: Green for balance and harmony, yellow for happiness and optimism, and brown for security and a connection to nature.


With these colors in mind, the next step was integrating them aesthetically into the space. This means considering the functionality of the room and our daily routines. It’s crucial to maintain smooth circulation and avoid overcrowding. Remember, less is more. If you need help detoxing your bedroom, check out the previous post.


We can also find these emotions in the materials we choose. Each material conveys something different. Marble transmits something entirely different from wood. Your preferences play a crucial role here.


I recommend exploring different materials that resonate with you, finding design styles that inspire you, and creating a moodboard. Here’s an example, but stay tuned for a special post on this topic in the coming weeks.

How do we incorporate these colors without losing balance? The 60-30-10 design rule helps us maintain color harmony: 60% for the main color, 30% for the secondary color, and 10% for accents.


In this case, green is the primary color used on the walls and decor, brown is featured in furniture and details, and yellow appears as small touches.

Lastly, your design should reflect your personal style, beyond current trends. It’s an inward journey where your space becomes a reflection of who you are, your needs, and desires.


This method goes beyond simply designing a space; it’s about designing a lifestyle. It’s about prioritizing your emotions and mental state to live the life you deserve and need.
